چکیده

Urban settings represent a challenging environment for teleoperated and autonomous robot systems. We present a new design for a highly terrainable robot system, detailing the major mechanical, electrical and control systems. The Pandora robot system is a tracked robot system with selfcontained computing, power and wireless communications systems. A sensor suite including stereoscopic and panospheric cameras, light-stripers and acoustic sonarring(s) allow the system to operate autonomously. Individually adjustable track-modules give Pandora extreme mobility in natural (vegetation, soils) and manmade (roads, steps) outdoor environments as well as indoor arenas (sewers, staircases, etc.). Locomotion was shown successfully over various extreme terrains, including reconfiguration to best suit the terrain and enable future sensor-supported autonomous operations.

DARPA ) Tactical Mobile Robotics Program

Today’s regional military conflicts are increasingly likely to occur in populated urban areas, in, around, over, and under unknown buildings. This places land forces in dangerous and unpredictable situations, and in many instances the conflicts also threaten noncombatants. To address this need, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Tactical Mobile Robotics program is researching...

A portable, autonomous, urban reconnaissance robot

Portable mobile robots, in the size class of 20 kg or less, could be extremely valuable as autonomous reconnaissance platforms in urban hostage situations and disaster relief. We have developed a prototype urban robot on a novel chassis with articulated tracks that enable stair climbing and scrambling over rubble. Autonomous navigation capabilities of the robot include stereo vision-based obsta...

Distributed robotic mapping of extreme environments

In the extreme environments posed by war fighting, fire fighting, and nuclear accident response, the cost of direct human exposure is levied in terms of injury and death. Robotic alternatives must address effective operations while removing humans from danger. This is profoundly challenging, as extreme environments inflict cumulative performance damage on exposed robotic agents. Sensing and per...

Cyclops: Miniature Robotic Reconnaissance System

Miniature mobile robots are desirable for military applications because of their ability to function covertly in highly constrained environments. However, work on such tiny robotic systems has been hampered by the difficulty of packaging locomotion, sensing, computing and power subsystems into diminutive spaces. This paper presents the design and initial prototype of a miniature mobile robot de...
